Autumn Velvet

The History of Velvet in Fashion

Velvet, a luxurious fabric known for its soft, plush texture and rich sheen, has a storied history that dates back over a thousand years. First produced in the Far East, particularly in China and India, velvet made its way to Europe via the Silk Road in the Middle Ages. During this period, it became synonymous with wealth and royalty, largely due to the complex and labour-intensive process required to produce it.

By the Renaissance, velvet was a favourite among European nobility. The fabric was often woven with silk and sometimes even embellished with gold or silver threads. It became a symbol of opulence, adorning gowns, robes, and ceremonial clothing for kings, queens, and clergy alike. Velvet maintained its association with high status through the Victorian era, when it was used in evening wear, especially for women’s dresses and men’s jackets.

With the advent of industrialisation, velvet became more accessible to the masses, but it never lost its association with elegance. Over the 20th century, velvet went in and out of fashion, making notable appearances in everything from 1920s flapper gowns to 1970s bohemian chic styles.

Autumn Fashion Trends in Velvet

As the party season draws close, velvet becomes the go-to fabric for fall fashion, offering both elegance and sophistication. This autumn, velvet is making a strong comeback, appearing in flattering silhouettes and beautiful hues. Here are some key velvet trends to watch for this season:

Velvet Dresses

Dresses in smooth velvet are ideal for fall events, offering a luxurious and glamorous vibe. Midi and maxi lengths are popular, a-symmetric draping and body-skimming silhouettes giving a modern edge. Look for deep shades like wine, midnight and emerald to complement the season.

Velvet Jumpsuits

Velvet jumpsuits are another fall favourite, providing both comfort and style. Wide-leg velvet jumpsuits, paired with knitwear or a fancy blazer are a go-to look this season. With high heels or sneakers – velvet jumpsuits are an easy style for relaxed evenings out, or more special occasions.

Velvet Tops

For a subtler take on the trend, velvet is making its mark in tops, too, as they are always adding texture and richness to any outfit.

This season, velvet is being used in fresh, modern ways, blending the fabric’s luxurious history with contemporary fashion. Whether worn in small doses or as a statement piece, velvet is the fabric to embrace for a stylish autumn.
